Fenced In is a 3D Mixed Media art expression. The fence is connected to the hand but is disconnected from the main piece. This reflects how I feel disconnected from being able to lend a helping hand. After making it, I can’t say I have a better understanding of how to help, but it opened my heart to a new creative perspective. The picture of this girl captivated me. I was drawn to her expression and just wanted to help in some way. It connected me to the reality of those around the world who are, trapped, encaged, or stuck. I want to help but honestly can I? How can I embrace someone who is in such need of love and necessities to survive?
The fence is made of conduit pipe and sprinkler system hose. With considerable bending and welding I created the fence and spaced it away from the plywood drawing of the girl. The hand split in two sections, the fingers on the metal fence and the palm on the plywood. The hand is made of the combination of chicken wire, plaster, bondo and joint compound.
